The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES) provides communications only during periods of local, regional or national emergencies. They give communications support to local government and state Emergency Operations Centers and remote locations. During national emergencies, RACES’ operators are the only amateur radio operators permitted by the Federal Communications Commission to be on the air. The FCC has assigned specific frequencies within authorized bands for emergency RACES use.
