In addition to volunteer and paid emergency services personnel in governmental or semi-govemmental roles, other volunteer organizations are ready to step forward to assist in time of crisis without thought of reimbursement.
The Red Cross’s humanitarian history during times of national and international disasters is well known. Among its many services, it can provide fixed and mobile feeding stations, clothing, mass or individual shelter and basic needs. Its blood collection and distribution program and first aid capability during emergencies is indispensable and has saved thousands of lives. A seldom considered, but extremely valuable, service provided by the Red Cross is the handling of welfare inquiries from anxious relatives outside a disaster area.
