“This team has the capability to win just as many games as last year’s,” concluded coach Doyle Dawson, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the 1983-84 Panthers who will take to the basketball courts on Friday in the season opener against page County.
Last year, his first as a varsity coach at RCHS, Dawson directed the Panthers to a 10-2 district record and first place in Bull Run for the regular season. Despite the loss of all-star Mike Leake and Robert Myers, rops Aylor and Doyle Dunn—four of the top eight players from the 1982 squad—he expects to improve that record.
“Last season, we played really well for ten games, then we went dead at the end, losing three out of our four last games,” Dawson recalled. One of those losses came in the first round of the district tournament.
