Water was turned on again Sunday morning from 7 to 9:30 when repair work began. The problem lay with a large tree root that had grown between the 4-inch cast iron line and the ground and cracked the line, according to Miller. “There was nothing wrong with the pipe — no rust, no deterioration,” he said, adding that the crack occurred in the cast iron pipe, not the galvanized pipe that gives the town most of its problem with water system leaks. Workers were able to repair the crack with a sleeve by 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
“It was a perfect example of cooperation,” Mayor Miller said. “Bruce and Steve Critzer, Ray Pullen and Thurman Whorton worked all day. It made me feel good to know that people are still willing to give up their Sundays to help out in an emergency."
