vember, “spastic, sporadic practice. “Four teams have to share the gym during the winter season,” Sally said, explaining the adjectives. “We’ve had to divide time with eighth grade, junior varsity and varsity basketball. We practice from 3:30 to 5:30 or 5:30 to 7:30 or 7:30 to 9:30 - that is, unless it’s a day with a home basketball game. Then we go down to the elementary school where we don’t even have a regulation court or net.”

But despite this handicap, the girls have improved dramatically, according to those who know the level of play in the intramural program and who’ve also seen the new varsity team practice. “We’ve got only six girls back from last year’s intramurals. Last year, the girls worked on individual skills. "This year, they had to learn how to cooperate as a team,” the coach explained. “Volleyball is so much different than basketball or any other team sport. In basketball, you can build the rest of the team around one or two really strong players. You can have a good ball handler who brings the ball down the court every time and a big man that you look to for scores and rebounds. In volleyball, all six of your players have to do everything well and you’ve got to have all your players working together - no stars - to get the ball over in three hits and place it where your opponents can’t return it.”
