Horse Center
A legislative subcommittee recommended last week delaying until 1985 a decision on where to place a state horse center.
There are three proposed sites for the $4.5 million facility — Augusta County, Rockingham County and Roanoke.
The facility would be used for horse shows and to promote the state’s horse industry, according to Del. Guest, who chairs the panel.
Candidates
Two probable candidates for the Democratic nomination for governor jockeyed for position and publicity this week.
A fund-raising group for Del. Richard M. Bagley (D-Hampton) announced Monday that it raised $125,000 for Mr. Bagley last year. The group was formed in December 1982 to “test the political waters,” as the group put it, for Del. Bagley’s bid for governor. Mr. Bagley, 56, is chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. He has been a member of the House since 1966.
The other candidate is Lt. Gov. Richard J. Davis of Portsmouth. A group of Tidewater business and community leaders announced last week that they have formed a committee to promote his candidacy.
The group, called the Davis ’85'Committee, will be headed by Portsmouth attorney Herbert K. Bangel.
Mr. Davis, 62, a lawyer and banker from Portsmouth, was elected lieutenant governor in 1981, and then lost a bid for the U.S. Senate in 1982.
