Agriculture officials report that the most sought aftef land by investors in other countries has been forest land. That accounts for approximately 49 percent, or 72,508 acres of the state’s total. Cultivated farm land makes up the smallest amount of the total, just .003 percent, or 27,624 acres.
VDACS commissioner S. Mason Carbaugh says the figures for 1983 showed the smallest net increase in foreign ownership of agricultural land since the law took effect by acreage — up 5,586 — yet the greatest last year in proportion to other types — up 9.62 percent.
