Rappahannock supervisors have joined with other local governments in endorsing January 22-28 as Virginia Community College Week.
The week is intended to focus on services provided by the state’s 23 community colleges to their students and the communities they serve.
Lord Fairfax information officials say 419,913 people were served by Virginia community colleges during 1983, 17,000 more than the year before.
Combined full and part-, time enrollment in the state’s community colleges as of fall term, 1983, was 112,336. Attendance at community colleges is encouraged as a cost cutter. Lord Fairfax spokesmen say the average cost for a full time student at a community college is $600 per year while tuition at the state’s four year colleges ranges from $1,100-$1,500. Room and board are additional at the university, but with convenient locations for commuters, most community college students may live at home and eliminate additional expenses.
Virginia’s community colleges offer a combined total of 220 programs in which a student may receive either an Associate in Applied Science degree, an Associate in Arts and Science degree, a certificate or a diploma.
