He presently has 25 work jptes, three of them in Rappahannock. Pearson did not name the sites, saying the program preserves their anonymity. ..Five people sentenced through the Rappahannock courts are currently doing work; he has about 40 altogether in the district right now, he said.
Most of them are assigned to perform various types of maintenance work, Pearson said, but with the cold weather most outside work has come to a halt. The people will remain under his jurisdiction until they complete the required number of hours imposed by the judge.
Each sentence includes a number of days in jail in the alternative, Pearson added. If the worker doesn’t show up for community service, he or she goes back to court. The judge pulls the records and orders the jail sentence be served. A typical sentence might be 30 hours of community service or ten days in jail. People who would lose time from work if they went to jail can do community service on the weekends, he added.
“Some don’t need to be in jail,” Pearson pointed out, calling community service the greatest constructive type punishment. “It’s not a free ride,” he said.
Luke described it basically the same. “It keeps the person from being a burden on the taxpayer while the person learns a lesson by performing labor."
Forms of labor vary, Pearson explained. He tries to assign people to sites close to home and to jobs suited to their particular skills. Pearson has seen some professionals come through the program, he said — radio technicians, painters, carpenters.
