Those who think that there’s nothing more to volleyball than batting the ball back and forth across the net should spend an afternoon at coach Sally Brand’s practice sessions or better yet, attend the season home opener of the new RCHS girls’ volleyball team on January 25 against George Mason.
These Lady Panthers hit fake spikes and dinks, move from 4-2 to 5-1 to 6-2 offenses (the numbers distinguish between setters and spikers). “And there’s a whole other system of strategies for defense,” noted coach Brand. “They have to switch from offense to defense every time the ball crosses the net.”
“This isn’t phys ed volleyball like you played in high school PE classes. This is power volleyball,” she explained. “It’s a strong, fast game. It takes less than one second for the ball to hit the net and drop to the floor. Bullet serves by women playing power volleyball have been clocked at over 100 miles per hour. I can go on and on about the sport,” Brand added with a grin. “I can talk volleyball for three days running!”
