Years ago, eagles nested in the rocks; today, only buzzards roost in the heights. Cascades, boulders and waterfalls between the high, sheer walls of rock add to the wild feeling of the deeply shaded canyon.
The trail passes a small cave — The Devil’s House — where hikers have carved their initials, dating back to the early 1800a. It ends at the springe with a panoramic

A high mountain road, long abandoned and itself a monument to man’s skills, leads in one direction to Thoroughfare Gap. In the other, the road stretches to Browntown in neighboring Warren County, the site of the lumber mills where settlers used to haul their logs to be cut into boards. On the route, it passes relics left by an earlier people who called these mountains home — the copper mines of the Indians.
In the days of the mountaineers, the spring was reported the scene of considerable social activity. It’s clear waters were used to brew batches of Rappahannock’s finest moonshine and travelers crossing the mountain to Brown town would buy their whiskey there.
