Is Virginia

Fiscal Conservatism?

By GEORGE BOWLES

Two news items, seemingly unrelated, caught the eye last week.

The first informed us that the U.S. Senate Finance Committee had approved an increase in the national debt to $1.7 trillion. The new limit is up $207 billion from last year.

The second item reported that former Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr., former Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. and former Del. Roy Smith of Petersburg had journeyed to Washington. These three musketeers of fiscal conser- .. vatism had gone there to be ordained by President ? Reagan as the heads of the 1984 version of the “Virginians for Reagan” campaign organization.

Only when viewed in the context of Virginia politics does the crashing irony of these two bits of intelligence become apparent.
