Signs
The Gay Street Theater has had a very special stroke added to the hard work done to improve and beautify the building over the last year. A handsome sign now hangs above the awning bearing the name of the theater and its sponsoring group, the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community. The sign is the fruition of three artists’ work— furniture designer Peter Kramer designed and carved the sign, including the recessed script used for the theater’s name; Dan Lewis, graphic designer and manager of Middle Street Gallery, painting the green and ivory background and the gold-leaf used in the recessed letters; and Davette Leonard, calligrapher and sign-maker, lettered RAAC’s name around the outer edge.
The Gay Street Theater, although only referred to by that name since RAAC took over its management in 1982, takes its newly-immortalized title from its location on Gay Street in
