Art Programs Endorsed
The School Board voted unanimously to endorse a resolution from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, pledging support for arts programs.
The resolution noted that the State Board of Education’s mandated emphasis on mathematics and science lowered the number of electives available to most students at the secondary level, at the same time that the National Commission on Excellence in Education has stressed its recommendation for achievement in the arts. “Ever increasing budgetary restraints make it difficult, if not impossible, for many of the Commonwealth’s primary schools to provide adequate instruction in the fine arts (including music) during the early formative yearn...The arts which enrich daily life, and promote a sense of community and stimulate economic development are in danger of losing a necessary and important place in the school mrriculum,” the resolution reads.
