The man-made and natural wonders of the world have inspired awe in their beholders for centuries. But wonders aren’t limited to the works of the ancients or indeed only to the rest of the world.
Virginia’s Northern Piedmont region boasts wonders of its own. A day doesn’t pass without natural beauty of the countryside in Clarke, Fauquier, Loudoun and Rappahannock counties drawing a passing motorist to the side of the road to marvel at what has been created here. No one sees Dulles airport at sunset without feeling exhilaration at the skill of man, the builder, or examines the immense craftsmanship of the North Wales Mansion in Fauquier without experiencing admiration for man, the artist.
While every encyclopedia includes a list of the seven Manmade Wonders of the World, no such definitive ranking exists for the marvels of the Virginia Piedmont.
Research by Arundel Newspapers reporters, assisted by people throughout the region, has attempted this evaluation of the Seven Wonders of Virginia’s Piedmont. Advisors for this selection were too numerous to mention. They included historians, state senators and delegates, highway engineers, local members of boards of supervisors, newspaper editors and reporters, lawyers, doctors, athletic coaches, real estate agents, veterinarians and others who travel the length and breadth of the Northern Piedmont region.
They entirely agreed on only one thing — this section of the Commonwealth does not lack for true natural and manmade wonders.
