At the same time that the School Board is struggling to run the county schools on the drastically reduced budget approved by the supervisors last year, the county has received substantially more in state revenue than was projected for 1983-84. That unexpected increase in state aid translates into reduced demands for local hinds to support this year’s educational programs.
In developing the budget for the current year, per pupil basic aid was estimated at $1,025; the amount actually received per pupil was $1,031, according to Estabrook. In addition, more money has come in than projected for both special and vocational education and in sales tax reimbursement, the superintendent reported. The overage never shows up in the school fund; it goes directly to the county coffers. The amount transferred every month to the school fund is based entirely on the bottom line budget figure approved last year by the supervisors. It does not change to reflect a greaterthan-expected contributibn from the state or a lesserthan-expected demand for county tax dollars for education, he explained.
