Washington. The street itself, however, has been called by that name ever since George Washington laid out the original plat of the town in 1749. Legend has it that the name hails from Gay Fairfax, reputed to be a sweetheart of Washington’s. While this cannot be corroborated, both Elizabeth Johnson, co-author of Fact, Fiction, Foolishness and the Fairfax Story, and Helen Holscuh of the Historical Society agree that the street was named for a young lady named Gay. The new sign is a tribute to the antiquity of the town and the commitment to preserve this aspect of Washington.
