Sesquicentennial baby
Clarke’s Sesquicentennial Baby has arrived, in plenty of time for the year-long county birthday celebration. And she’s everything the sponsoring committee could hope for. Not only is she the daughter of Clarke County residents, but she was actually born in Clarke County and has Clarke as part of her name.
The new princess of the 150th anniversary festivities is Megan Elizabeth Clarke Mackintosh, bom Jan 3 at 1:59 a.m. at her parent’s home, Rockdale in northwestern Clarke County. The black-haired baby girl weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces at birth. Her father, Robert Mackintosh, 38, a horse trainer, assisted in the home delivery which her mother, Eleanor, 29, said was planned “years ago.” A midwife, Julianna Fehr from Winchester and a friend of the family who is a licensed practical nurse, assisted Megan into the world. v
Clarke’s birthday party officially began New Year’s Day with a ceremony atop Ashby Gap where Route 50 cuts through the Blue Ridge. At a cabin that is one of the oldest structures in Clarke, Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr. (R-Va./7th), former U.S. Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. (I-Va.), Del. Raymond R. “Andy” Guest Jr. (R-31st) and state Sen. William A. Truban (R-27th) joined such historic figures as George 'Washington, Daniel Morgan, George Rogers Clark and Abraham Lincoln to kick off the celebration.
About 500 people braved blustery, biting winds to send off green sesquicentennial balloons and watch cannons roar happy birthday to Clarke County.
Tests ordered for suspect
A Berryville man accused of murdering his 84-yearold Josephine Street neighbor was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination in Clarke Circuit Court Monday.
Judge Robert Woltz agreed to a defense motion for tests to determine if William E. Moten, 27, was mentally competent at the time of the murder.
An investigator for the Clarke County sheriff’s department testified Moten told him he had seen “the old man get stabbed” but that “another power or spirit killed the old man.”
Investigator S. N. Clifton said Moten told him he didn’t know “if it was good or evil, but it wasn’t me.”
The battered body of Brqivn Mancefield Paige was found by a search party behind Johnson-Williams Intermediate School on Josephine Street last July. Relatives, worried when they could not locate him at his home, had called the sheriff’s department.
An autopsy showed Paige had died from a stab wound in the chest. Authorities speculated the motive may have been robbery.
