During the past year, Kathleen has been working at La Dama Maya herb farm in Luray. She explored some of her thoughts and opinions about healing in a recent interview.

Kathleen began the interview by explaining the role of a Physician’s Assistant.

“A Physician’s Assistant is trained to function as an extension of a physician, but always under a physician’s supervision,” she said. “We take histories and physicals, diagnose common disorders and we have prescriptive rights.”

“We do rotations and residencies with medical students and that was wonderful because you are in a learning environment continually. Working with physicians, I gained an enormous respect for the great depth of knowledge that they have in biochemistry, physiology and the. body’s mechanisms. That type of knowlege is* primarily why I chose this course of study. ”

Kathleen went on to explain what the connection was for her between traditional Western medicine and herbology.

“I always wanted to know how and why an herb worked — how and why this pressure point worked. I wanted to be able to explain to someone not only the scientific reasons why a practice is aiding the healing process, but also sharg with that person how beautifully the body’s systems work in coiyunction with nature. I enjoy the aesthetics of medicine.”

‘To me, an ideal would be a coexistence of all forms of medicine. To illustrate, the Chinese, in their writing of the word ‘crisis’ have both a symbol for danger and a symbol for change.”

Kathleen believes that each school of medical knowledge has its proper place.

“Modem medicine is so well advanced that trauma, accidents or other threatening crises in our lives are able to be stabilized. In the emergency room they can stop hemorrhaging and balance important fluids. They can basically maintain life functions,” she continued.
