Perching, Gen. George C. Marshall ttnd Lt. Gen. Leonard T. Gerow, commander of the 29th Division, of which the Virginia National Guard was a part during the early days of World War II. Also on the roster of recipients are Miy. Gen. Charles H. Gerhardt, who commanded the 29th during the war in the European Theater of Operations, and two Virginia Medal of Honor winners. (The Virginia Army National Guard is still a part of the reborn 29th Division.)
During the past 20 years the decoration has been awarded only eight times and only twice to civilians.
The governor’s interest in the military state of the commonwealth £ame naturally.
