“Not only do these local wildflowers and herbs provide us with valuable nutrients, but the beautiful histories embellish one’s studies of herbs.”
“There is a conscious effort today to demystify the use of such plants. At the same time, I feel it is important to keep the magical qualities so as not to lose the language of the plants in scientific analysis.”
Kathleen cautions that herbs, like any drug, must be treated with respect.
“When I speak of these herbs and illustrate their uses I am not prescribing them for any individual. All of this knowledge is readily available and obviously becoming of greater interest as seen by the influx of holistic health books.”
“One caveat, however, is that anything we ingest or employ — be it herbs, foods, drugs or even exercise — should be coordinated with the help of a skilled practitioner.”
Kathleen proceeded to discuss her work at the herb farm.
“Our work at the farm has been very encouraging. The owners, Maureen Messick and Lee" McWhorter, have been awarded a contract to grow two tons of wormwood (Artemesia), which the government is using in conjunction with private industries for an improved treatment of malaria.”
“Interestingly enough, the researchers’ data was primarily extracted from ancient Chinese writings dating from around 2,000 B.C.”
‘While we. hear health analysts and planners speak of cost efficiency and proper utilization of resources, slowly the light bulb is turning on and more are seeing that not only does natural mean simpler, but also cheaper. People are becoming more responsible, more curious and more excited about the changes that are happening in ‘alternative’ health practices.”
How does it happen that Kathleen, who has lived in Ireland as well as Chile, has chosen Rappahannock for her home? “I was drawn here primarily by the mountains, but also by the really spirited local community,” Kathleen said. “There are so many individuals here who are strong and welcoming.’
