The couple built their Amissville house, which they knew would become their retirement home, on weekends. “The children helped a lot building it,” says Dora.
Their home is a comfortable place with two grandchildren, Amanda and David, keeping the couple busy. “Boy”, their part-Beagle, lies snuggled near the warm stove in the living room.
Dora wonders where “Mitzy”, their cat, is hiding.
“We usually have a couple of members of the family here,” says Dave, “at all times.”
Dora and Dave are charter members of St. Matthews’ United Methodist Church in Vienna which they have attended almost every Sunday since services began in 1957. Each week they must leave their Amissville home very early as they are responsible for opening the church for the first service.
A 50th anniversay celebration for the couple will be held at the church this June. “When the weather gets better,” explains Dora.
“Last Sunday I told Reverend Wes Arthur that we are getting ready for our 75th anniversary,” smiles Dave, “he said to go for it!”
