Tobacco bill
Senate supporters of a measure outlawing cigarette sales to minors fought off two crippling amendments and sent the bill to the House.
The vote Friday to approve Sen. Madison E. Marye’s bill was 30-9.
Marye (D-Montgomery) introduced the bill to reduce the number of teenagers who use tobacco. The legislation would make selling tobacco, including smokeless products, to someone known to be under age 18 a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The bill exempts cigarette vending machine owners as long as the machine carries a posted warning that purchases by minors are illegal.
