the’ infant program! .she and CamQle; arranged to have weekly tutorials during working hours so she cotild study for her GED. When the test scores arrived showing that Arlene has passed the exam, Ms. Harris says, “It was a wonderful and glorious moment.”
Mary Tauss, the director of the Center, says of Arlene, “She is a very caring and gentle person with infants. Whatever schedule the baby is on is the one Arlene meets. In the older programs the scheduling is more regulated, but in the infant program, each baby determines his own.”
Joan Platt, now the assistant to the director, began her career at the Center as a volunteer in Arlene’s room. She recalls being amazed by Arlene’s ability with the babies, remarking on how readily they responded to her.
When asked if she could have any job, Arlene said, “I don’t think I’d be satisfied if I weren’t working with kids. My husband wanted me to work in a service station he started up several years ago, but I didn’t want to have to contend with grownups every day. Babies are great. It’s the one place you know you are truly needed and appreciated.” And though it may come as a surprise to her, there are many more grownups than babies who appreciate Arlene Frye.
