One reason is the fear that a falling limb will damage the house. There are several options for homeowners with this fear.
They can replace the tree with a more suitable, smaller tree, lighten the load of the larger limb by removing some branches or use bracing and cabling techniques to provide supplemental support.
Topping does not increase total shade, a common misconception that also leads to tree-topping. New growth behind cuts is very dense and weak. It reduces air flow, making an ideal breeding-ground for insects and diseases.
It also causes increased limb breakage in stormy weather.
Sawing large limbs off a tree leaves large, open wounds. These wounds rarely heal properly. They always cause moderate to serious injury, drastically reducing the life of the tree.
