Sabbatical leave policy

“This is the first semester that the sabbatical leave has been available^. Mrs. Aney Massie is the first person to be granted a sabbatical,” explained elementary school principal Mrs. Maggie Piper.

“The sabbatical leave policy is for the purpose of professional study by members of the staff. The maximum period of leave is one school year or the equivalent. The percentage or number of staff that can be on leave at the same time will be determined by the budget for that year,” Mrs. Piper continued.

‘Teachers must have three years of local service on our school staff to be eligible for sabbatical leave. They receive fifty percent of their salary while on sabbatical,” she said.

“The following year they would advance normally on the salary scale. We will give them a similar position upon their return. They are not guaranteed the same position,” said Mrs. Piper.

“They do obligate themselves to serve three years in our division after the sabbatical or make suitable arrangements to repay the debt that incurred in giving it to them,” she said.

Teachers must file their application by January 1 preceeding the year that they want to take the sabbatical. It is granted if a suitable replacement can be found for the employee.
