RICHMOND — After weeks of precarious survival before a state Senate committee, a controversial mobile homes bill escaped and went to immediate defeat on the full Senate floor this week.
The Senate voted 30-9 against the bill, which was introduced by Sen. Richard J. Holland (D-Isle of Wight) and championed by Sen. Kevin G. Miller (R-Fauquier/Rappahannock/Page/Rockingham.)
Sen. Charles L. Waddell (DLoudoun/Fairfax) and William A. Truban (R-Fauquier/Clarke/Warren/Shenandoah) voted against the bill, which would have prevented local zoning ordinances from prohibiting “double-wide” mobile homes on agriculturally zoned land within their jurisdictions.
Sen. Miller and other supporters of the legislation said 13 counties prohibit the houses, which are not mobile once they are trucked to their sites, and more than 30 require special use permits for them. They want double-wides treated the same as conventional housing built on the site.
