“Buy a board! Fill up those pickle jars!” are words used frequently by Maggie Rogers. She is chairman of the Rappahannock County Elementary School SPTA playground committee consisting of Kenny Rogers, Terry Waggener, April Heddleston, and Sam Cliffton.
“We’re planning a whole new playground to enrich the existing fitness program and to provide an improved and enlarged play-exercise structure for grades kindergarten through seven,” stated Mrs. Rogers.
Ms. Carol Nowakoski, the elementary school’s physical education teacher, believes that “there is definitely a need for additional equipment because the equipment that’s there now is so traditional. We need equipment to stress upper body strength, imagination and creativity. Having additional equipment will make the kids more excited about developing themselves and make them more interested in their bodies.”
“Our major objectives are to repair and rebuild old structures, build a new major play structure, and erect a fitness course for the upper grades,” explained Mrs. Rogers. “The jungle gym will be sandblasted and repainted and new seats will be bought for the swings. We will be dismantling some old structures so we can use the parts in new structures.”
During the planning stages the playground committee observed various playgrounds and did research on playground safety. “We visited Central Elementary School in Warrenton and took a close look at their playground by “Leathers,” an architect who uses “bamraising ideas” for construction of playgrounds. The playground at Central cost thirty thousand dollars to build after two years of planning.
“We also looked at playgrounds in Criglersville and Mosby Woods Elementary in Fairfax. We went to George Mason University to look at their fitness course. Sam Cliffton researched playground design and safety at the University of Virginia library.
