“The drawings for the proposed equipment were compiled from this research, Ms. Nowakoski’s advice, the committee’s ideas and equipment catalogs,” said Mrs. Rogers.
“A large play structure will be built for grades K-3. The structure will be mostly wooden with slides, ramps, bridges, decks, stairs, poles for sliding, towers with ladders, and a rope walk. A tire climb, tube crawl, six tire tri-swing, stump jumper, a hopscotch pattern, and spruced-up existing equipment will be included in the K-3 area, also.”
Ms. Nowakosld observed that “a lot of the kids in kindergarten through third grade really lack in upper body strength, so they need things to climb on. A time for great growth is between the ages of five to eight years. Developing and maintaining muscle strength and developing endurance is important. It’s a time to find out what their bodies can do.”
Mrs. Rogers described the Fitness Course for the upper grades. “Included in the course are a climbing wall, parallel bars, log wall, balance beam, standing long jump, measured vertical jump, vaulting bar, sit up bench, push up log, log jump, climbing poles with a bell at the top, and step ups. Signs will be included to guide students from one station to the next. The completion of the course may be timed if the student would like.”
Ms. Nowakoski would “like to see each child in fourth through seventh grades run the Fitness Course at least once daily. I think it will be a real boost for upper grades to know something was built for them, too.”
“Playgrounds like this usually cost ten to thirty thousand dollars or more including labor costs,” explained Mrs. Rogers. “We’re getting away with a minimum of three thousand dollars using students’ and their families’ muscle, surplus, and discounts from local merchants. The SPTA has set aside one thousand 'dollars so we have to raise at least two thousand dollars with our fund raisers. We can do this only if the community helps, both in dollars and
