Fewer visitors
to park
The Shenandoah National Park had 31 percent fewer visitors in February as compared with a year ago. In February 1985 5,887 visitors entered the Front Royal entrance station; in February of this year that figure was 4,229 persons.
Thornton Gap had 10,325 people enter a year ago; last month the number of people declined to 7,367.
The total number of persons entering the park in February 1985 was 54,713 as compared with 48,960 last month.
Because of healthy gains in January the figure for the calendar year through the end of February shows a rise of 11.7 percent compared with 1985. ^
The Big Meadows weather station reported that last month’s maximum temperature was 58 degrees F. and the low figure was -2 degrees F.
Precipitation measured 3.59 inches and total snow accumulation was measured at 18.5 inches.
