After three weeks of miserable racing conditions, suddenly there’s a break in the weather and horsemen have bombarded Warrenton with entries this Saturday.
More than 180 entries have been made for the eight- race card at Broadview Farm, including 60 in the flat race which will have to be split, perhaps even into three or four divisions.
“I can’t ever remember anything to approach this,” said racing secretary Will O’Keefe. “I can’t remember splitting the flat race and still having anything left over for the other races.”
Not only are there entries left over for the other races on Warrenton’s card, but two jump races may also have to be split. The open timber has a field of 24 entered, only eight of which are cross entered in other races, and the maiden hurdle race has 25 entries, also with only eight cross entries.
The smallest race on the Warrenton card is the first race, a junior pony race which is a new addition to the local hunt’s program. Five ponies have been entered in the race, but entries will remain open until shortly before the 11:30 a.m. post time Saturday.
Fans of racing over timber will have three, and possibly four, wellfilled races to satisfy their appetites.
