Mr. Bowles began his journalism career soon after retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1971.
After writing a column for the Goochland Gazette and covering politics for a local radio station, Mr. Bowles served as editorial page editor for the Charlottesville Daily Progress from 1974 to 1977.
Mr. Bowles’ bid for elective office was unsuccessful. In 1969, he failed to win the seat now held by Del. V. Earl Dickenson (D-Louisa).
Mr. Bowles is survived by his wife Nancy Thurman Bowles, and four sons, George Bowles of Barboursville, James Bowles of Knoxville, Tenn., Mark Bowles of Richmond, and Thomas Bowles of Charlottesville.
