“The next day is spent with the tour guides in Williamsburg,” she said. “Each guide has about 25 students. They have things open to students that are not open to the general public. So really the school groups get to see a lot more. We go to the Governor’s Palace. We walk to the College of William and Mary. Then we go back to the motel and have dinner. That night we go to two more programs. One is about the craft shops and the other is about military life back then.”

“The next morning we’re up at 6:45 to load the buses to go to Cape Henry. They climb the lighthouse and walk on the beach. We see the stone cross that shows where settlers first touched land,” described Mrs. Baines. “From there we ride to Suffolk and go to Dismal Swamp. Then we ride five miles to Lake Drummond where Washington surveyed during his early days. From there we ride to Richmond. After dinner we go to the Fine Arts Museum. Virginia is fortunate to be one of the few states to have a state owned fine arts museum. This is a cultural experience that I think the students ought to have.”

Mrs. Baines continued, “The next morning we go to St. John’s Church. Then we go to Stanley’s for lunch. If we have enough time we go across the street to Miller ahd Rhodes so they can see a big department store. From there there’s the science museum. All the activities in the museum are hands-on activities with computers, audio science, and other things. We also see the universe program. This year it’s about Halley’s Comet and the Shuttle missions. At 5 they have a snack, get on the bus and sleep all the way home,” laughed Mrs. Baines.
