Mathematics teacher Helen LaCava complained that the county’s ranking, in terms of its pay to teachers, has dropped significantly since 1980. She stated that there was only one other county in the state with a worse record. Ms. LaCava compared the turnover to a hospital patient; “new blood is essential but if it has to be a constant flow, the system is in trouble.”
She said that the schools here have an “unstable environment.”
Richard Abell stated that he has devoted his adult life to teaching. ‘This county should cease to be a training ground for new teachers,” he said. He complained that teachers are trained here and then leave to take jobs in counties that pay “much higher salaries.”
