The Library
The Rappahannock County Library is a splendid resource that appears underutilized. It is surprising there are not more people who use the library.
Grace Sims and her staff do an excellent job in obtaining current books and magazines. The library also has a surprisingly large collection of reference works as well as fiction and non-fiction books. The library subscribes to a number of important newspapers.
Reviews of recent releases are prominently displayed which measurably adds to the convenience of those visiting the library. This is enormously helpful when one tries to select a new book. And there are many new books from which to choose.
The library now has an expanded genelogical reference section which is of enormous help to those trying to search family roots.
The library is also active in participating in literary discussions. Currently it is sponsoring “Changing Voices” which explores the Southern Literary Renaissance. Rewarding programs such as this are an important asset to our community.
Once an old Presbyterian church, the building has book stacks where pews once stood. The library is a quiet place that invites exploration.
A friend is gone
George Bowles died on his 61st birthday this past Sunday. His political columns which appeared in the Rappahannock News and 34 other state newspapers offered important insight into issues affecting every citizen of the Old Dominion.
He had the ability to appraise politics accurately and fairly and it was this talent which earned him enormous respect from political leaders and journalists. He was also (respected by average citizens who were enriched for having read him.
George Bowles’s columns have appeared in this newspaper since 1977. He will be missed.
