Continued from page 4 self is not the issue. The issue we must all face is: change. Change means survival; stagnation means deaths. Change need not be frightening if we prepare to take steps now, so the process will seem natural and comfortable to us all, the key to change is EDUCATION.
Recently on national television a news series was given on the American Farmer. Proud, idealistic and independent families with a love of the land, are literally dying of financial ruin. The cause? Poor economic management due to inadequate education. The result? Large, cold corporations are buying out the family farmer because they know more. They know more about Economics, Productivity, Profits and Losses, and Computer Literacy. If Rappahannock deeply desires to continue in this independent and self-sufficient rural lifestyle, they must face the reality that it is possible, but only with education. If we do not educate our own community, the “Outside” will eventually move in with High Tech companies. Buying out the financially indebted farmer will be an east ploy at that point. This kind of future would be frightening for our community.
Now is the time to ask ourselves some in-depth questions. Do we value our education system in Rappahannock? How much? Do we care about our children? How much? Do we have a vested interest in our community? There should be a direct correlation between caring for our children/community and education. This county’s children are our future. What we provide for them now educationally, will be returned to our community in the near future.
