officials from the state’s Division of Solid Waste Management. They also retired to executive session to consider competitive bidding and expenditure of public funds involving a landfill but when they returned to an
open forum an hour later, they reported that no action had been taken.
Last year, the board endorsed the Lee Partnership’s application to
operate a private landfill on 128 acres just beyond the Washington town limits. That application was the only one before the state’s Division of Solid Waste Management. Virginia’s landfill permitting agency. In light of the engineers’ finding, “I’m sure that it will be withdrawn,” said Supervisor Chairman Hubert Gilkey in a telephone interview Tuesday evening. “So, as of this moment, we don’t even have a site for the state to consider.”
