Foreign exchange students from Switzerland, Denmark, England, Norway and Mexico are residing with local families and attending Rappahannock County High School during the 1966-87 school session.
Silvia Elisa Aguilar is a senior from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. She is involved in the Girl Scouts, 4-H, the Mt. Lebanon Church youth group, SCA, chorus and drama. Her hobbies include listening to music, dancing, reading mysteries and romance novels, and attending basketball games.
She ei\joys being a member of community organizations and supporting school events. She said, “I think this can be one of the best ways to learn about American life and at the same time eryoy the company of others and all the activities that we can do.” Basketball games are a special treat to her because she never had the opportunity to attend games at her Mexican school.
Silvia wanted to visit the United States because she was eager to learn new things, customs, meet people and experience different ways of thinking.
In Mexican schools, the students stay in the same room and the teachers travel from room to room. There is no cafeteria, just a store where the students can buy potato chips, sodas, candies and other pre-packaged items.
Ethics, logic, etymology, art history and philosophy are among the subjects offered at her school back home. Most students take nine classes each semester; therefore some classes meet only two or three days a week.
Silvia has found that the prevailing impression of most Mexicans that Americans are materialistic and demanding is not true. She misses dance classes, her social service group and her church. However, die continues to enjoy the new friends she has made at RCHS.
She intends to live in Mexico after graduation. Silvia feels that the purpose of the exchange program is to take back her new knowledge of the United States to Mexico to promote a better understanding between the two countries.
Thomas Breivik, from Oslo, Norway, is an 11th grader who participates in soccer and the Student Cooperative Association. His hobbies include skiing, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and ice skating. He has acquired two new hobbies while here: letter writing and dishwashing. ... .
