There will be no more smoke from the forge’s chimney than from the chimney for a wood stove and even less than from a Stove burning regular coal, according to Ms. McCue. "I’ll be using metallurgic coal. It’s much, much cleaner than the coal usually used in stoves... I don’t want a dirty fire. It makes my work much harder.”
The BZA approved Ms. Mc-‘ Cue’s permit application with the conditions that (1) hours of operation for her power trip hammer and other equipment be limited to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. five days per week (excluding Sunday) and (2) appropriate fire precautions be taken, including construction of a masonry wall and double chimney and provision of fire extinguishers and an adequate water supply. The permit was granted for five years with the zoning administrator to review after one year to ensure that conditions are being met.
The board members apologized to Ms. McCue for drawing out their considerations for over an hour. “We would have done this a lot quicker under the old ordinance,” explained Sharon Luke. “This is our first special : use permit application under the new zoning ordinance.”
“If I may say so, we’ve ham-' mured out a good decision, and without using a trip hammer!” quipped Mr. Bird.
“Now, Lee, don’t be malleable!” warned Peter Kramer, getting in a last joking word.
Before re wrapping for the snow and near zero temperatures outside, the BZA members agreed to move their meetings from the fourth Wednesday to the fourth Tuesday of the month, beginning in February.
