*'■The Middle Street Artists’ Cooperative celebrates its first anniversary as a cooperative venture this ~ month, feting the occasion with the i, second annual “Art from the Heart” £. Valentine’s Day show.
The gallery’s first season as a co, op was a success, according to Middle Street’s director Alica Overton. She reported that the venture was a „ financial success in its first year, “an - accomplishment any wmall business would be proud of.”
Mrs. Overton, who took over as , the gallery’s director in November, said that she has found the 30-plus . members of the cooperative to be a great help. “They have a good network of contacts and a good working relationship. They are very supportive of each other . . . Every time I meet with them, I walk away feeling really fortunate to be involved with * such creative people.
She is handling the “business end” of the gallery, as well as promoting the artists and their work. The cooperative is developing a slide registry, which Mrs. Overton will > use in her travels around the country promoting the gallery’s members. She said that it is helpftil, when talking to prospective buyers and exhibitors, to have examples of a variety of work readily available. R , Mrs. Overton says that she sees her role as a kind of marketing consultant for the gallery’s member art- ists. “There is a big market out there,” she said, “and I hope to open ' it to these artists... It’s difficult to put a fair market value on your own ' work, and I hope to help them do that. It’s so easy to be talked down.” 1 She said that she is in the process r of meeting with each artist individually, “To find out why they do what they do. It’s much easier to represent someone once you know and understand them.”
“I believe in these artists,” , she said. “They are very, very talented people.”
