A licensing requirement will give Rappahannock “an educated work force,” Mr. Smet said. “It will increase the work force, not decrease it,” and won’t add to construction or renovation costs. “Shoddy work will cost a homeowner a whole lbt more in the long run than work that was done right to begin with,” he said. “An unlicensed worker is definitely not going to pick up the tab to correct his mistakes.”
But more important than cost considerations is safety, according to the building inspector. “What I’m concerned with most of all is one day having a serious accident . . . We have electricians working in this county who have never heard of the building code. They’ll put in electrical wire that’s too light to carry the load. They’ll put in too many receptacles ...”
“But that’s what we pay a building official for - to find those problems (before an occupancy permit is issued),” Supervisor Henry said.
