The helicopter crew surveys the transmission and distribution system for brush or tree limbs that need to be cleared from PE rights-ofways and for any damaged equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced. They will also check the condition of the poles, cross arms, braces and insulators, looking for woodpecker damage to the poles and loose guy wires.
Helicopters are used to scout the system because they can hover as close as 20 feet above the poles to conduct the checks in outlying areas.
