Literacy volunteers to meet

The Rappahannock Literacy Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Child Care and Learning Center near Washington. The Rappahannock County Post 1150 will meet Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7:80 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Sperryville.

Lions set music contest

The Rappahannock Lions Club will hold its annual Bland Memorial music contest beginning at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in the music room of Rappahannock Elementary School. All instrumentalists and vocalists attending elementary, junior and senior high schools, public or private, are invited to compete for the prizes offered the Rappahannock winners and for the opportunity to sharpen their musical skills through competition. Winners of the Rappahannock Lions Bland music scholarship competition can look forward to competing in a regional Lions Club contest at Warrenton Junior High School March 15. Prizes are to be awarded there, too. Contestants will be the winners from Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fauquier and Manassas.

Drawing in color

Local artist Robin Purnell will offer a 10-week class in the pastel medium on Mondays, Feb. 16-April 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Middle St. Gallery in Washington. Using natural objects as the subject and guide, the class will explore the many uses and techniques of pastel drawing. Several classes will also be devoted to portraiture and the history of pastels. Participants should have some drawing experience.

The fee for the 10 weeks course is $100, which does not include materials. Please call Robin Purnell at 675-3081 to register.

Workshop scheduled at CCLC

A workshop entitled Touch Techniques and Stress Management will be held at the Child Care and Learning Center near Washington on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class will be taught by Carrie Blair and Curt Millar. Art from the Heart’

Middle Street Gallery will be holding its second annual Valentine's show, this year entitled “Art from the Heart,” with an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. This marks the first anniversary of Middle Street Gallery functioning as an artist’s cooperative.

Historical Society meeting

The winter meeting of the Rappahannock Historical Society will be held Friday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the courthouse on Gay Street. All members and interested persons are urged to attend.

Gospel group to perform Sunday

Virginia Sings Gospel, a non-profit organization, is sponsoring a Southern Gospel Concert featuring the award winning Inspirations and The Singing Greenes on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Fauquier High School, Warrenton. MC for the concert will be “Red” Shipley, former IXJ with Big K Radio and now hosting the Stained Glass Bluegrass program on WAMU, Washington, D.C. Also performing will be 17-year-old Michele Lyn Cox, bringing her unique musical ministry to Warrenton for the first time.

The Inspirations and The Singing Greenes travel all across the United States performing in concert settings and churches of all denominations. Their traditional gospel sounds have gained them fans nationwide and Warrenton will hear many of their charted songs on Sunday.
