More than 100 Rappahannock residents braved a threatening sky Saturday morning to participate in the i Rappahannock Anti-Litter League and You!’s (RALLY!) first annual Clean-up Rappahannock Day.
“It was an unqualified success,” said RALLY coordinator John McCarthy. Everybody came through just like it was planned, he said. The highway department supplied trash bags, safety vests and trucks to haul the filled bags. McDonald’s of Culpeper supplied lunch, after the clean-up was completed.
“We didn’t get everyone together until after it was over, because several groups went directly to the site they wanted to clean.”
Mr. McCarthy said that as near as he could tell, the group filled between 250 and 275 bags, including 60 by a group of Chester Gap residents. “The staggering fact is we barely dented it. All we did was clean up several roads and some really bad dump sites. On one stretch of Rt. 211, there was a full garbage bag every 50 feet.”
“It was a positive day,” agreed RLEP president David Chuse, who assisted with the event’s organization, “despite the fact that we were cleaning up other people’s garbage.”
As the clean-up progressed, Mr. McCarthy said, “The people got madder and madder — especially at people who drove by and tended to avoid making eye contact. By the end of the day they were feeling pretty militant.”
Mr. McCarthy said that he found “the demographics of litter” fascinating. ' For example, the area around signs advising that “Litterers subject to arrest. . .” tended to be more heavily trashed than the ^ area some distance on either side. The signs, he added, also tended to be fall ofbtiOet holes. 1
