Panther tfack and field coach Frank Clemson is expecting a good season for the Rappahannock team. The season begins with a tri-meet against Clarke and Strasburg at Strasburg on Wednesday, April 8.

“We have people in each event who will score points,” Coach Clemson said. “The problem is that we don’t have a lot of depth . . . We can win the event and still lose - if the other team takes second, third and fourth places.”

In track and field, points are awarded to the top five finishers, with first place getting five, second four, and so on. The meet winner is determined by the team which amasses the most points from all events.

“We have most of the same people back,” Coach Clemson said, “and they have improved. We’ve also picked up some new athletes, and they’re going to help us.”

“Most of those who returned placed in the district tournament last year and then went on to the regionals. Our program has been producing some good individuals,” he added.

Dexter Freeman, MVP track athlete and top point-getter for the Panthers last year, leads the squad’s returning athletes. Competing in the long jump, 300 intermediate hurdles and the mile relay, “he’s just an allaround guy,” Coach Clemson observed.

Returning lettermen Marley Hay and Jonathan Watson are expected to be standouts in the distance events. Both« had outstanding records during the fall cross-country season.

Neil Burke is looking to have a good spring in the quarter mile, and Coach Clemson expects Randy Jenkins to put in a good showing in the sprint events.

Daniel Roy is returning to the throwing circle again this season, and he will be joined by Mike Dearing and Carroll Frye.

Nathan Tanner is high-jumping again for the Panthers. This season he will be backed up by Benji Roy, a ninth grader who cleared an impressive 5’ 8” as an eighth grader last spring.

Tom Taylor and Rodney Grimsley are back this year as well, looking for good seasons in the hurdles and mile relay events.

Howard Jones and Joe Slaughter have joined the Rappahannock team, looking to assist teammate Randy Jenkins in filling out the top three spots. 1

And Mike Dearing, when he takes a rest from throwing, will be filling a spot in the relay events. “He will be a help,” Coach Clemson said.

For the girls’ team, Donna Foster will be returning to compete in the mile relay, as well as the 300 intermediate hurdles. Her teammate on the mile team will be Cathy Dodson, who also will run a leg of the
