My recent notice in this paper concerning my claiming of a piece of land in order to make it my own (parcel 2, section 57 on the Rappahannock County Tax Map) seems to have caused some misunderstanding which I would like to clear up now.
First of all, “Adverse Possession” is a perfectly legal act designed to keep land from falling into disuse. The property in question has been listed on the tax records for a number of years as “unknown owner.” It is a totally different parcel of land from that upon which my family and I have been living for nearly ten years due to the kindness and charity of Florence Settle, although it does adjoin it.
The property I am claiming, which is mostly north of the Blackwater Creek bridge on 615, but bounded by the creek on the south, has been unimproved since I have been living on the Settle place, and until I began improvements around the time my first notice appeared. I feel that there is no rightftil owner other than myself, yet while I am maintaining exclusive ownership I am not trying to steal someone else’s land - a lot of land in Rappahannock County is thankfully “unimproved.”
If there has been a mistake at the tax office and if this can be shown I will gladly withdraw my claim. Until
