Regardless of what type of event is planned, caterers say that you can have a wedding more in keeping with your ideal if you can communicate with the caterer. It can make the difference between a successsful wedding party and a disappointment, says David Chaparro of Two’s Company Catering in Los Angeles. He advocates making it clear just what type of party you have in mind.

The first thing is to feel comfortable with the catering manager, says Ms. Owens. Then if you ask the right questions, communicate your understanding of what you will be getting and have it spelled out in writing, there should be no unpleasant surprises on the day of the event. It is also important to describe the type of atmosphere you wish to create, whether simple or extravagant, she says.
