Hampton District Supervisor J. Newbill Miller said Monday that he will not seek re-election in November, ending a career of public service in Rappahannock County which has spanned two decades.
In explaining his decision, Mr. Miller said that it was instilled in him as a child that “you do something for the community. I think I have done that.”
He added that “I have been doing something (in government) since the early to mid-60s... it's time for me to devote some time to myself.”
Prior to his present term on the Board of Supervisors, Mr. Miller has served as both mayor and member of Council for the Town of Washington, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, and now serves as the supervisors’ representative on the county’s Planning Commission.
In January, he will step down from both those posts.
Mr. Miller, a respected breeder of registered Black Angus cattle, will continue to manage that operation, as well as his real estate business.
Former Hampton District Supervisor Clarence Baldwin requested that Mr. Miller be appointed to fill his seat when he resigned shortly before his death last spring, and Mr. Miller agreed. He ran unopposed in a special election for that seat last November.
