Angie Armentrout will join Dodson on the quarter-mile team, as well as compete in several sprint events. Suzie Dealing “is looking good” for the sprint events as well, Coach Clemson said.

Anna Hudson, who holds the school record for the triple jump, returns to defend her mark, and will also compete in the long jump as well as a place in the starting blocks for the sprints.

Denise Eidson “looks strong in the 800,” he said, and Beth Conover will offer the competition a run in the 100 meter hurdles. And Bonnie Grimsley, after a season of quick improvement during cross-country, is looking to continue her fast track in the distance events.

In the throwing events, Wendy Stringfellow expects another excellent season, Coach Clemson said. She will be joined by teammates Penny Atkins and Dorothea Butler in the discus.

“The team is working hard,” he said. “We’ll be able to beat some of the schools that gave us problems last year. We’re going to be better than last year.”

Another problem for the Panthers, Coach Clemson said, will be their lack of an entry in the pole vault event. He said that the stricter state standards for vaulting pits, plus the investment in equipment, had made the event prohibitively expensive for RCHS.

Without an entry, the Panthers’ opponent will be awarded points for that event by default.

That problem is temporary, however. This is the last year for pole
