Of course, conducting such a valuable listening exercise carries some risks. Not everyone is going to like what is heard, and the results of such a survey will be disputed. For instance, the sizable number of elderly and retired persons in our county will point possibly to the increasing need for a full-blown pharmacy.
Doctors Krebser and Martin, current holders of that market corner, will certainly not like what they hear, and as landlord of Flint Hill Square, Dr. Krebser obviously does not have to heed what the marketplace says. But that is OK, because the community will have made its attitudes and opinions clear in an organized, thoughtful fashion. And you can bet your best brass button that sooner or later some smart, aggressive entrepreneur will figure out how to respond to our market’s stated needs.
In the meantime, all of us in the county, not just residents of Flint Hill, should ponder the real needs of our shared business market and look at this current situation as an opportunity to offer constructive suggestions to Dr. Krebser and the businessmen of Flint Hill. Who knows? Perhaps we will discover that there really is an overwhelming community consensus after all!
